Once you give it enough light, the Canon does very well for an inexpensive standard-definition camcorder, while the Sony is really only mediocre at best, about the same as the JVC GZ-MS100 I used back in 2009. The Canon also favors a noticeably warmer color temperature than the Sony and seems to stand up better to YouTube's re-compression, while the Sony tends to blow out the highlights (bright white areas) and boosts the color saturation too much. Sony's Active SteadyShot (new for 2011) does help reduce camera shake while walking, but the Dynamic Image Stabilizer which Canon added to the FS300 and FS400 should help improve upon the FS200's performance in that regard (at the expense of no longer having the external mic and headphone jacks in the newer models). Otherwise, the Canon FS300, FS30, FS31, FS400, and FS40 should all perform similarly to the FS200, while the Sony DCR-SX45, DCR-SX65, and DCR-SX85 are all identical except for the amount of built-in flash memory offered (none, 4 GB, and 16 GB, respectively).

Just me messing around with my SD60 camcorder and testing out the 1500x digital zoom. To shoot the footage of the moon all I did was mount the cam on my £10 tripod, switch off the optical image stabiliser and set everything else to auto. Considering this is classed as a budget/entry level camcorder I think it performs extremely well . The random waves of blurriness (kinda like heat waves) are more to do with the atmosphere than the camera itself. Also when zooming at that distance even the tiniest vibration or movement causes the image to jump all over place. I did my best to keep still (not easy when it's -2C outside!). I had to focus more on the left side of the moon because the right was a bit too bright and made it difficult to get a clear picture. I checked out Sony's new Handycam HDR PJ at CES. One of it's most unique features is the Balance Optical Steady Shot, which is a new way to optically stabilize your image while you shoot. ----------- Get the most CES 2012 coverage in one spot - see it ALL on Rev3Tech! www.youtube.com Twitter - twitter.com Facebook - facebook.com Google+ - gplus.to
